Butterfish

Small, silvery, and soft-bodied, butterfish are delicate and flavorful. Their name comes from the buttery texture of the meat when cooked. In Jamaican cuisine, butterfish is often seasoned with herbs and spices, then lightly fried whole and served with festivals or bammy. Because they’re small, they’re usually eaten bone-in, adding to the experience. Many people enjoy them as street food or on the beach, fresh out of the frying pan.
